GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO
"The plovers that dwell on the beach at Shio-no-yama
Are calling to affirm an everlasting life."
- Ancient Japanese poem
We cannot hear the plover's voice:
That music is too silent.
Of distant kin to the plover, though,
Are those brass birds
Of Bach's B-Minor Mass who
High upon their exaltation
Sing a gloria to God.
And such awakening
Is not, perhaps, so gentle.
And perhaps if we could hear the plover's voice . . .
But we cannot.
- Walter Rufus
Eagles, 1980
